The cheapest way to JFK, LaGuardia and Newark, and when a car service is worth it

We run a car service, so you might expect us to say a car is always the answer. It is not. Here is the honest 2026 math for getting between Manhattan and New York's three airports, and the situations where paying more actually saves you something.

The short answer

For one person with a carry-on, public transit is the cheapest way to every NYC airport. Once you add people, bags, kids, a late flight or a Friday-evening surge, the gap closes fast, and a flat-rate car can end up the better deal.

Manhattan to…Cheapest · Taxi · GeronimoLux
JFKSubway + AirTrain about $11.75 · $70 flat plus surcharges, usually $85–$95 with tip · $220 flat
LaGuardiaBus + subway, a few dollars · metered, often $40–$60 before tolls and tip · $180 flat
NewarkNJ Transit + AirTrain, roughly $16–$18 · metered plus tolls, often $90–$120 all in · $220 flat

Approximate fall 2026 prices. Transit and taxi rates change; app prices move minute to minute. GeronimoLux fares are for an Escalade ESV or Suburban, taxes included.

What about Uber and Lyft?

Rideshare is the wild card. JFK to Manhattan can run from about $45 at a quiet hour to $110 or more when it rains or a wave of flights lands at once. If your timing is flexible and you are traveling light, it can be cheaper than a taxi. If you need to know the price before you leave, it is a gamble.

When the cheapest option costs you more

  • You are traveling as a group. Four people on the AirTrain and subway is close to $50, with bags on the stairs. One car is one fare.
  • You have kids or a lot of luggage. Transfers, stairs and turnstiles are where trips fall apart. A car with car seats goes door to door.
  • Your flight lands late. Late-night trains run less often, taxi lines get long, and apps surge.
  • You need the time. A quiet back seat is an hour of calls or email on the way to a meeting.
  • You hate surprises. A flat fare booked ahead is the same at 3pm or 3am.

Quick math

A family of four, JFK to Midtown on a Friday evening: rideshare during a surge can top $100 in a car with no room for four suitcases. Our JFK flat fare is $220 in a full-size SUV, taxes included, with your flight tracked.

How to book a car without surprise pricing

  • Ask for a flat fare in writing before you book, with taxes included.
  • Give your flight number so the driver tracks delays instead of guessing.
  • Check the cancellation rule. Ours: free 24 or more hours ahead, 50% at 12 to 24 hours, full fare under 12 hours.
  • Know what costs extra. With us: Meet & Greet inside the terminal is $85, an extra stop is $80, a car seat is $50. Tolls, parking and airport fees are added at cost and listed on your receipt.
